The Youth Initiative for Human Rights strongly condemns today’s attacks of the Serbian Radical Party’s MPs on Aleksandra Jerkov, Democratic Party MP because of her calling for termination of Vojislav Šešelj’s term as MP.

As YIHR communicated a week ago, since Vojislav Šešelj is sentenced to 10 years in prison and since all judgments of the Appeals Chamber of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) are binding for the Republic of Serbia, Vojislav Šešelj’s term as MP must be revoked.

After today’s threats and brutal insults of DS MP Aleksandra Jerkov by Radical MPs, we demand that the violent and abusive behavior at the National Assembly of Serbia is punished and that the National Assembly initiates, through its competent bodies, a procedure of stripping the convicted war criminal Vojislav Šešelj of his term as MP. Today’s attack is yet another confirmation that the politics of crime does not know argumentation and facts, but threats and violence as the only political means.

Our obligation is to secure peace for future generation and to fight so that the politics of crime is never again present either in the National Assembly or in the Government of Serbia. The first step in that sense must be lustration of persons convicted for war crimes. In the past few decades, Šešelj was expelled for breaching parliamentary discipline several times. We must not allow that today, after effective verdict for war crimes, he remains in the parliament.  This is not only the issue of moral and political responsibility of MPs, but also an obligation under Article 88 of the Law on Election of members of Parliament

For this reason, our message to the MPs of the National Assembly of Serbia is:

“Carry Šešelj Out!”
