Activists of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights today, with a symbolic action of laying flowers in front of the entrance to the Belarusian Embassy in Belgrade, expressed support for the citizens of Belarus and said that there is no friendship with Lukashenko who sacrifices lives and freedoms to survive forever in power.

Democratic societies consider Belarus “the last European dictatorship” and are unified in the condemnation of falsified elections and police brutality against Belarusian protesters. Human rights activists from Serbia stand in solidarity with the citizens of Belarus who have been fighting for democracy for decades.

We are ashamed when president Vučić claims that Lukashenko is one of “Serbia’s few friends”. Friendships in life, just as in international relations, are built on mutual values, and we share no values with Lukashenko.

Our friends are the citizens of Belarus, who fight for peace, democracy, human rights and freedoms. We do not form friendships with those who sacrifice human lives and freedoms in order to remain in power indefinitely.

We demand that president Vučić and the government of the Republic of Serbia cancel the announced meeting between Vučić and Lukashenko and the planned joint military exercises. We demand that the Serbian president and government join the international initiative led by the European Union and its member states to find a democratic, peaceful way out of the crisis caused by the Belarusian election falsification.
